Fuel Cost Calculator UK

EV vs Petrol & Diesel Cost Calculator

Compare what you'd spend on electricity against petrol or diesel over a year, using your own figures.

Compare running costs

Off-peak EV tariffs can be far cheaper than standard rates.

Typically 3–4; lower in winter.

How the comparison works

EV cost per mile = price per kWh ÷ miles per kWh

Fuel cost per mile = (4.546 ÷ MPG) × price per litre

Multiply each by your annual mileage to compare yearly energy costs.

Example: 8,000 miles a year

An EV doing 3.5 miles per kWh on a 24.5p standard tariff costs about 7p a mile, or £560 a year. A petrol car at 45 MPG and £1.45 a litre costs about 14.6p a mile, or roughly £1,172. On a 7p off-peak tariff the EV figure falls to about 2p a mile.

Electric car charging from a wall charger on a home driveway next to a petrol hatchback

Home vs public charging

Your tariff makes the biggest difference. Public rapid chargers often cost several times more per kWh than home charging. If you mostly use them, enter that price instead.

For a petrol or diesel figure on its own, use the fuel cost per mile calculator.

Ways to reduce your motoring costs

Fuel is only part of the cost of running a car. Shopping around each year for car insurance and breakdown cover, keeping on top of servicing and checking tyres regularly can all make a difference. We plan to add independent pointers here over time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out an electric car's cost per mile?+

Divide the electricity price per kWh by the car's miles per kWh. At 24.5p and 3.5 miles per kWh, that's 7p a mile.

Is an electric car cheaper to run than petrol?+

Often, especially with home charging on an off-peak tariff. Public rapid charging can cost much more per kWh and may make an EV similar to, or dearer than, an economical petrol or diesel car.

Why is my EV less efficient in winter?+

Cold batteries and cabin heating use more energy, so miles per kWh can drop noticeably. Use a lower efficiency figure for winter.

Does this include servicing, tax or insurance?+

No — it compares energy costs only.
